OBJECTIVES & KEY RESULTS (OKR) –

An effective internal communication strategy is important for company-wide transparency. We currently share our objectives, accomplishments, and metrics through our OKRs, weekly Huddles, the monthly Progress Reports, and quarterly All Hands.

To improve on this effort, we created an OKR Drive to serve as a centralized location for everyone to easily access, as needed.

Our OKR drive contains the following:

  • Introduction to OKRs at Flipboard: this deck captures everything you need to know regarding the OKR goal-setting process. The deck is a helpful resource to new hires, but also may be useful to anyone who needs a quick refresher.

  • Introduction to the OKR Progress Report: this deck outlines the benefits of the monthly OKR progress report, including improved efficiency and monitoring of our company objectives.

  • OKRs: these spreadsheets capture all information on our company and team OKRs including details on ownership, target setting, and scoring.

  • OKR Progress Reports: our monthly OKR progress reports provide a snapshot of our OKR progress to date, recent accomplishments & milestones, as well as challenges & plans to address.

  • OKR Scoring: this is a scorecard providing a numerical grade for each objective for the quarter. Details and insights are provided for each goal providing significant learning for the next quarter.

The information is organized in the OKR drive by year & quarter, and in the following order:

  1. OKRs

  2. Progress Reports

  3. Scoring

For more information on OKR’s (and other topics listed above), please refer to the Biz Ops Resource folder.

For more information on goal setting please view our OKR 101 deck and review these related resources:

MEETING BEST PRACTICES,

NOTE-TAKING BEST PRACTICES &

DECISION MAKING BEST PRACTICES

Recognizing how vital meetings and decision making are to our business, particularly now that we are not in the office together, the Biz Ops and DEI Culture team came together to develop these resources to help us ensure productivity and clear communication. The Meeting Best Practices deck includes friendly reminders, meeting best practices, virtual zoom etiquette, and inclusivity techniques incorporated from our Behaviours of Inclusion training sessions. The Decision Making Best Practices are a guide for our Flipboard employees through our process with a clear framework that will help us make better, faster, and more inclusive decisions. The Note-taking Best Practices deck captures note-taking techniques and tools to help teams effectively document how we decide, collaborate, and communicate action items/next steps. The Remote Work Best Practices pulls all of this together and also includes some helpful tips with using Slack and Zoom.

#break-buddies (donut) - is a really great way to remind us to step back and spend time to talk with each other as it has been difficult to get the serendipitous social interactions that would normally occur in an office setting. We’d love to have you join!

How #break-buddies pairing works:

  • Join #break-buddies in Slack

  • Once every two weeks, a new round will begin.

  • Schedule a time for that day or the day after to chat with the other person. Don’t put it off!!!

  • Sit down and chat! Donut will suggest conversation starters if you aren’t sure where to begin.

  • These are one-time meetings with new people to meet each time, though we wont stop you from talking to your new besties!

FOCUS TIME WEDNESDAYS

Flipboard has been intentional with carving out “focus time” for our team every Wednesday. This time is meant to minimize interruptions so everyone can feel more productive. (Though some meetings may be necessary on a Wednesday due to scheduling conflicts, please keep these to a minimum.)
